Power-Assist Wheelchair Attachment

This senior design project sought to combine the best characteristics of manual and power wheelchairs by creating a battery-powered attachment to propel a manual wheelchair. The primary customer needs were determined to be affordability, portability, and travel on uneven surfaces. After the initial prototype, using a hub motor proved unsuccessful, so a second design was developed that consisted of a gear reduction motor and drive wheel connected to the back of the wheelchair by a trailing arm that could be easily attached/detached from the frame. The prototype of the second design succeeded in meeting most of the project goals related to cost, off-road capability, inclines, and range. Improvements can be made by reducing the attachment weight and improving user control of the device

Infrared Thermography as an Alternative Method for the Assessment of Moisture Content Readings in a Porous Brick

Many pre- to late-nineteenth century brick masonry structures encountered by conservation professionals are constructed with hygroscopic, porous brick that has been attacked by the combination of moisture and salt. The presence of these enabling factors of deterioration accelerates damage to a brick. Professionals need an affordable nondestructive tool that does not require extensive calibrations to highlight dangerous levels of moisture in the presence of soluble salts at a macroscopic scale prior to evident material loss. The infrared camera has been proven to display a visual image of moisture anomalies in a brick wall, but quantification requires spot readings with a moisture meter and accurate quantification requires sampling and laboratory testing. This paper investigates whether an infrared camera can be used to quantitatively determine in situ moisture content of a porous brick wall. In achieving this, a testing procedure was developed and performed on thirty-two hand-molded colonial face brick cuboid samples conditioned to four equilibrium moisture contents. The results of this test concluded that infrared thermography can distinguish different levels of moisture content with the thermal images. Secondly, there exists a linear relationship between ∆T surface center point and measured moisture content as well as a similar relationship between ∆T average surface and measured moisture content when room %RH is lower than equilibrium %RH for the sample. The linear relationship of measured moisture content and ∆T may be consulted for determining moisture content readings in different ambient conditions; however, nearly saturated samples require further study

Caveats in the Use of Corporate Literature by Costume Historians

This paper identifies some of the characteris-tics and functions of corporate literature and suggests relationships between the study of corporate literature and the study of costume. It poses many questions and challenges to costume historians asserting that while corporate literature has been used extensively by researchers, it has not been adequately assessed. Researchers must be careful not to accept the data at face value but to question its context, purpose, and intended audience. Résumé Cet article décrit certaines des caractéris-tiques et fonctions des publications d'entre-prises et suggère d'établir des liens entre l'étude de ces publications et celle du costume. L'auteur de l'article soulève de nombreuses questions et souligne des difficultés qui se posent aux historiens du costume, affirmant que, même si les chercheurs y ont toujours amplement puisé, ces publications n'ont jamais fait l'objet d'une évaluation adéquate. Non seulement chercheurs et chercheuses doivent-ils bien se garder d'accepter telles quelles les données de ces publications mais ils doivent s'interroger sur leur contexte, leur but et leur public lecteur

Exploring Churn and Alignment between Retention and Occupational Culture as Perceived by Professional Truck Drivers

Despite advances in logistics software and increased driver pay, the trucking industry continues a historic wave of human capital risks in the form of driver turnover and driver shortages. Previous efforts to understand the phenomenon of driver turnover rely heavily on supply chain, transportation, and logistics based disciplines. The current study provides a human capital ontology towards understanding professional truck driver perceptions. Within the interpretive framework of pragmatism, the study applied a simultaneous ethnographic and phenomenological research design to explore the phenomenon of churn and professional truck driver perceptions of environmental alignment between trucking industry retention strategies and the occupational needs and culture of professional truck drivers. Perceived environmental alignment reduces barriers with external social and cultural institutions while facilitating improved organizational performance and individual performance and behavior. The study provides a network model of the occupational culture of professional truck drivers. The study found the occupational culture, cognitive and normative dimensions form the occupational needs of professional truck drivers. The study further found environmental alignment and environmental misalignment exists between trucking industry retention strategies and the occupational needs and culture of professional truck drivers. The study concluded that although the phenomenon of churn exists, the phenomenon is not an attribute of nor promulgated by the occupational culture of professional truck drivers. The study’s findings of strategies environmentally aligned with occupational needs and culture of professional truck drivers, could serve as the foundation for improving industry and individual driver performance beyond retention. The study’s conceptualization of the trucking industry as a population ecology and professional truck drivers as a culture sharing group, advances research of human capital risks at a collective or industry level. Finally, alignment between human capital strategies and occupational cultures has the potential to improve performance across industries and occupations beyond the trucking industry

Histology Personal Trainer: Identifying Tissue Types Using Critical Thinking and Metacognition Prompts

Tissue-type histology is a foundational lab exercise for many courses… and our students hate it. In anatomy and physiology, where more obviously applicable labs are just around the corner, students struggle to grasp this basic content. At this institution, a Hispanic-serving, two-year community college, scores are historically lowest on the histology exam and many students drop the course after this exam. Attrition is a problem nationally as well; while community colleges train about 60% of healthcare workers, attrition rates in anatomy and physiology courses are nearly 50%. Upon closer investigation of this exam, we found students were attempting to memorize the provided field of view, rather than identifying tissue hallmarks, and therefore struggled to apply their skills during the exam
